Turkish Minister Sees Violence Against Women As Global Problem
11 September 2009
The Turkish state minister for women and family defined on Thursday violence against women as a global problem. Turkey's State Minister Selma Aliye Kavaf said preventing all types of discrimination against women, eliminating gender inequality and violence against women were issues concerning the entire world. "Cooperation is obligatory to solve this problem," Kavaf told AA correspondent in the Italian capital of Rome. Kavaf is participating in the International Conference on Violence Against Women at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Italy is hosting the conference as the current president of the G-8 countries. Kavaf said violence against women could be seen both in developed and underdeveloped countries. "We have to create common norms regarding this issue, and we have to set up mechanisms monitoring the implementation of the norms," she also said. Kavaf said gender equality should not solely be perceived as a problem concerning women, and men should also be included in the process. "Therefore, men have been the most important part of our efforts in Turkey to ensure gender equality, particularly regarding issues such as violence against women and education right of women," she said. Kavaf said education was also important for ensuring mentality change regarding these issues, and Turkey was also working on that. The Turkish state minister for women is expected to return to Turkey after participating Thursday's sessions of the conference.
