Philippines Government Piñol Hit For Anti-Muslim, Anti-peace Stance
31 July 2009
While the civil society groups and other conscience-stricken groups are clamoring for peace in Mindanao, Vice Governor Emmanuel Piñol of North Cotabato is continuously propagating his anti-Muslim and anti-peace agenda. Recently, Piñol criticized the government for the issuance of presidential directive for the suspension of all military operations (SOMO) and called it a “stupid decision”. Piñol accused President Arroyo of issuing the directive without even consulting the local government unit in the area, stressing that the military should protect the welfare and security of the civilians by not stopping its operations against the MILF forces. However, Hassan Hatab, a political officer of the MILF in Western Mindanao said, Piñol must be out of his mind in criticizing the government's directive because he does not know that the purpose of both SOMO of the government and the SOMA of the MILF are part of the ceasefire mechanism designed to protect the lives and properties of innocent people who are internally displaced due to the war in Mindanao. Hatab said President Arroyo deserved to be respected by Piñol being only a local executive. He said the ceasefire declaration will surely pave the way for the immediate resumption of peace talks between the government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). “This is to return the internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their former dwellings, which everyone including Piñol must support,” he added. Hatab likened Piñol to Mayor Celso Lobregat of Zamboanga City who is also propagating an anti-peace formula in Western Mindanao.
