26 July 2009
WEST BANK, (PIC)-- On the anniversary of the assassination of four of its leaders Hamas has issued a statement renewing its commitment to struggle against occupation until liberation is achieved. The four leaders were assassinated in July of 2001 and July 2002; Salah Shehadah was assassinated in Gaza on 22 July 2002, Jamal Mansour and Jamal Salim were assassinated in Nablus on 31 July 2001 and Salah Darwaza was assassinated in Nablus on 25 July 2001. The statement read: "We in the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, in the West Bank, from the heart of suffering and from behind walls of oppression and conspiracies renew our pledge to our fallen leaders to shoulder the sacrifices to tread in their footsteps towards dignity, honour and liberation." Salah Shehadah was assassinated by the Israeli occupation airforce dropping a one tone bomb at an apartment block in Gaza, killing him along with 17 others, including his family and some of his neighbours. Jamal Mansour and Jamal Salim were assassinated by a rocket fired by an Israeli occupation fighter jet and hit the office they were in. Salah Darwaza was assassinated by a rocket fired from the air at his car. Government In Gaza Supports Resistance The Palestinian government in the Gaza Strip has affirmed its support for resistance against occupation, describing it as the real means of confronting the Israeli occupation's crimes and constant attacks on civilians besieged in Gaza. Taher Al-Nunu, the government's spokesman, told Safa news agency on Sunday that no detainee was held in the government's jails for resisting occupation or for political affiliation. The Palestinian government deals with all factions and forces in accordance with the law and the higher national interest, he elaborated. Nunu said that Gaza prisons are open for all human rights organizations to "make sure that we are telling the truth". Swiss FM: Hamas important player in the Middle East Micheline Calmy-Rey, the Swiss foreign minister, has described the Hamas Movement as an "important player" in the Middle East that could not be ignored. Calmy-Rey, who was interviewed Sunday by the Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag, was responding to the Israeli ire over a visit to Switzerland by a delegation of the Hamas Movement, where the delegation members met with Swiss officials. A senior delegation of the Hamas Movement recently toured a number of European countries to explain the Movement's stands regarding various issues while a number of European delegations visited Damascus and the Gaza Strip to meet members of its political bureau and other leaders.
