President Yar'Adua Orders Resuscitation of Nigeria-Pakistan Bilateral Commission
26 July 2009
Abuja — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has directed the immediate resuscitation of the Nigeria Pakistan Bilateral Commission, which last met in 1993 at Islamabad. The President gave the directive during a farewell audience he granted to the out-going High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Nigeria, Mr. Khalid Durrani, at State House, on Thursday July 23. "We need to immediately resuscitate the Bilateral Commission which last met in 1993, in order to conclude and implement several agreements and further strengthen the warm long-standing relations between us", he stated. President Yar'Adua recalled that Nigeria's Penal Code was developed, after independence, with the assistance of Pakistan, while military cooperation between the two nations had a long history. He thanked Mr. Durrani for the service he rendered while in Nigeria, and wished him success in his future endeavours. Earlier, the out-going Pakistani High Commissioner, Mr. Khalid Durrani had said there was need for even warmer relations with Nigeria, and thanked President Yar'Adua for the help and cooperation he enjoyed during his tenure in Nigeria.
