MILF Hails UN Decision To Resume Delivery Of Food To Mindanao Evacuees
15 July 2009
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has hailed the decision of the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) to resume delivery of food aid to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) or evacuees in Mindanao, after halting it temporarily because of a spate of deadly bombings that rocked the region recently. Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, chairperson of the MILF, told Maradika that the resumption of the food aid is a very welcome development and offered a ray of hope to the evacuees who can hardly eat twice a day. “My congratulation to those men and women in the UNWFP for heeding the pleas and moans of the suffering IDPs,” he said. On Monday, July 13, Stephen Anderson, WFP country director and representative, told media reporters that they made the decision following intensive discussions on the security situation in the region during the weekend. Anderson, however, stressed that they felt that humanitarian workers are not target of any of the armed groups in Central Mindanao. He said the food delivery for the current month of July would continue from July 13 until after all the 387,000 IDPs had been served. “We will continue to monitor the situation on the ground. We still expect the situation to remain tense and insecure so we want to be careful when we are distributing. If the situation will change for the worse, then we will adjust our plans accordingly,” he said. Earlier, the MILF has assured the UNWFP of their utmost effort to secure their humanitarian workers but reminded them that no one in the region not even the military has total control of the situation. The MILF told them that it is desirable that before they enter any area especially where there is active conflict, there must be prior coordination so that necessary security arrangement will be provided. “We cannot take chances,” it stressed, adding that even if the perpetrators are plain bandits but the consequence ricochet directly to suffering IDPs in Mindanao.
