Philippines Eduardo Ermita Back To Old Trick - Moro Liberation Front Warned
10 July 2009
A ranking member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has cautioned Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita in making hasty and nasty statement accusing the MILF of being behind the series of bombings in Mindanao that killed 12 persons and wounding 90 others. Asked to react, Khaled Musa told www.luwaran.com “It looks like Secretary Ermita is back to his old trick of fooling around with facts on the ground just to muddle the issues in the Mindanao situation.” When pressed on to elaborate, the MILF deputy chair on information said that the aging general-turned-politician from Batangas sounds more like becoming “a vanguard of the spoilers bent on blaming every bombing incident on the MILF.” Ermita, in an interview with the Philippine Star on July 9, 2009, accused the MILF of being responsible for the spate of bombings in Mindanao and described them as “act of betrayal and bad faith on part of MILF”. He pointed out the bombings took place when Ambassador Rafael Seguis, chief government negotiator, was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to meet with his counterparts to try to work out the resumption of formal peace talks with the MILF. A series of bombing rocked the cities of Cotabato, General Santos, Iligan, and Jolo recently soon after some 52 Manila-based and Mindanao-based members of the media were barred by the Army’s 6th ID from visiting the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maguindanao. At the press conference held in Cotabato City, the Army’s spokesman, Col. Jonathan Ponce, was quick to label the IDPs as “enemy reserved forces.” As a result, the IDPs have now looked at the AFP combat soldiers as “occupation forces” unable to protect the non-combatants and civilian population in violation of humanitarian law and human rights. “This is clearly a failure on the part of the government and men-in-government like Ermita in their responsibility to protect the people,” according to the members of the MILF Social Welfare Committee, who requested anonymity for security reasons. One social worker said Ermita is a man who can smile in the face of an adversary because he is smooth talker, but he is proven to be treacherous even to the best of friends just to score “pogi points.” She told this website that many wish that Ermita’s face would no longer be seen in positions of power when the next President of the Philippines comes to the Palace. “Ermita is long overdue to be out of the picture,” she said, “because he is not doing anything good to the peace-making in Mindanao.” “Ermita is a master of paikot (fooling around) in the peace process since martial-rule days,” adding that Ermita managed to survive as martial rule military-civilian relations officer to cling to cabinet positions.
