AFP Indiscriminate Artillery Shelling Continue In Maguindanao, Aggravate IDPs Suffering
5 July 2009
Indiscriminate artillery and mortar shelling by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) raged on the past two days in villages in Maguindanao towns. Field reports identified areas hit by the AFP indiscriminate bombardment spree included barangays Bagong Upam in Shariff Aguak, Tatapan and Pimblakan in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, and Linantagan in Mamasapano. Intermittent firing took place for several hours in the evening the past two days without provocation. The areas are mainly normal civilian communities that had been evacuated by residents since August last year. Thousands of houses owned by civilians in the areas were torched to flame by the government soldiers, leaving the owners no choice but to remain in temporary shelters erected within the areas being bombarded Civilians expressed grave fear and anxiety over last week pronouncement by AFP officers that internally displaced persons (IDPS) are actually “reserve enemy forces.” More than 300,000 IDPs are still languishing in appalling conditions in evacuations centers in Maguindanao alone, and this big number of IDPs mostly children, women and adult are treated as reserve enemy forces by the AFP. “There’s no wondering that these days AFP had stopped looking for MILF forces particularly commander Kato because the AFP target now is concentrated on the IDPs. Such a dangerous revealing state of mind,” said Atty. Datu Michael Mastura, Senior Member of the MILF Peace Negotiating Panel. In a forum last Tuesday with journalists, military officials bluntly cited IDPs as "enemy reserve force." Meanwhile, IDPs from Maguindanao evacuation centers told Luwaran.Com/Net that the past two weeks they had been running out of food assistance. Veracity of this information is yet to be verified and if indeed truth then what could be the reasons other than the perpetuation of food blockade by the AFP intended for the IDPs. But what can be expected from AFP if they want to extinguish these IDPs anyway.
