Ramazan Kadyrov Blamed For Murder Of Activists Natalya Estemirova
17 July 2009
Kavkaz -- A Russian human rights group has blamed Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya's Kremlin puppet president, for the kidnap and murder of an award winning activist. Natalya Estemirova's body was found on Wednesday near the city of Nazran in Ingushetia, the region neighbouring Chechnya, just hours after she was seized from her home in Jokhar (former Grozny), the Chechen capital. "Ramzan already threatened Natalya, insulted her, considered her his personal enemy. We do not know if he gave the order himself or his close associates did so to please their boss, Oleg Orlov, the chairman of Memorial, said in a statement posted on the group's website late on Wednesday. According to her colleagues from the Memorial, Kadyrov has bridled at Estemirova's recent investigations. Kadyrov's "ombudsman" Nurdi Nukhazhiyev has warned about it the head of the «Memorial», said in the human rights center. "We have taken risks, which are turn out to be unjustified. We are very guilty", the Memorial says. According to the "Caucasian knot" website, a day before the murder, Estemirova together with a chairman of Committee for Civil Assistance Svetlana Gannushkina tried to meet with Maskhud Abdullayev, a son of the deputy Emir of the Caucasus Emirate Supyan Abdullayev, deported from Egypt and then took hostage in Moscow. Human rights sources remind that Estemirova has revealed a recent fact of public execution a local resident in the village of Akhkinchu-Borzov on July 7. "A state terror is happening in Russia, - Estemirova's colleagues say. - We know about the murders in Chechnya and outside Chechnya. They are killing those who try to speak about the truth, who criticize the authorities". Meanwhile, US authorities condemned the killing of Estemirova and urged Russian authorities to punish those responsible for her death. The statement was made by a spokesman of the National Security Council at the White House, Mike Hammer. Meanwhile, the accused of Estemirova's murder Kadyrov promised to "spare no expense" to reveal the murder. White House's representative Hammer said: "We call upon the Russian government to bring to justice those responsible for this outrageous crime and demonstrate that lawlessness and impunity will not be tolerated." US State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said that the United States were deeply saddened about the murder of Estemirova. "Estemirova was uncompromising in her willingness to reveal the truth... She was devoted to shining a light on human rights abuses, particularly in Chechnya, and received a number of international awards for her brave work. We are expressing our deepest condolences to her family", stated in a written statement of the department. In its turn, the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch has called on Russian authorities to conduct an independent investigation into the murder of Russian human rights defender Natalia Estemirova. "Human Rights Watch urged the Russian government to launch a full, independent, and transparent investigation into Estemirova's murder", said by the organization. "It seems to be open season on anyone trying to highlight the appalling human rights abuses in Chechnya. It's high time the Russian government acted to stop these killings and prosecute those responsible", said in this connection the director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth. Human Rights Watch has also urged Russia to inform the foreign partners on the progress of the investigation: "Estemirova fought for justice all her life and the best way to honor her would be to find her killers and put them on trial. Ensuring her murder does not go unpunished would help to break the vicious cycle of abuse and impunity in Chechnya. Natalia was a close friend of Human Rights Watch, whose work was an inspiration for all of us. Her death is a terrible loss".
