Resistance Group MILF, Government Forces Clash Anew In Maguindanao
2 June 2009
Firefight erupted as patrolling troops of the 54th Infantry Battalion, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) supported by paramilitary and armed civilians entangled with the freedom fighters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)at Barangay Pinguiman, Datu Piang, Maguindanao yesterday 5pm. Barangay Pinguiman is an adjacent village of Reina Regente where almost a dozen of houses owned by relatives of MILF fighters were burned downed by AFP troops couple of days ago. Rains were heavily out pouring when the two warring forces collided in fierce gun battle for almost an hour. Artilleries and mortars were fired indiscriminately and to any directions by the government forces as fighting were blazing up and even more after the clashes. Scores of government soldiers and armed civilians were killed, which until late evening were yet to be retrieved from the clash scene. Lamentably, some innocent civilians residing beside Mahad Dulawan in Datu Piang were hit in the crossfire and wounded by shrapnel from the AFP indiscriminate mortar shelling, cited reports received by Luwaran.Net/Com. Artilleries were still being fired by the AFP towards suspected positions of the MILF forces in Talayan, Guindulungan, Datu Saudi and Datu Piang, Maguindanao, until late evening probably to drive out MILF forces and prevent their guerilla counter offensives on military detachment in the area. At around 9pm last May 28, 2009, MILF forces brandished high-powered firearms and 81mm mortars in harassing the army detachment at barangay Matalam, Talayan, Maguindanao. Casualties were not known though. Meanwhile, thousands of internally displaced persons caused by the government military operations since August last year had been appealing for the past days to halt the fighting in the wake of the opening of the school year for their children starting this Monday. Several schools were converted as evacuation centers for the IDPs since August, a big predicament confronting the opening of classes in the embattled towns in the province of Maguindanao. The continuing government military operations are being blamed by the internally displaced persons (IDPs) for the humanitarian tragedy they had been into for more than nine months already. “My family is ready to transfer to makeshifts from the school classrooms we had been occupying in order not to hamper the opening of classes next week,” a displaced mother said. According to reports, two-thirds of the more than half a million IDPs created by the AFP operations are children whose schooling was stopped due to the continuing confrontations with the MILF forces.
