Fierce Fighting In Lanao del Norte: Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) Resist
1 June 2009
MILF mujahideen under the 102nd Base Command of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) clashed with Philippine troops at Barangay Bacayawan, Munai, Lanao del Norte, on Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 2009. Bacawayan lies along the border of Madalum, Lanao del Sur, and Munai, Lanao del Norte where government troops are positioned to interdict mujahideen guerrillas coming in and out of Lanao del Norte. According to field reports, seven (7) AFP soldiers were killed during the encounter which took place at around 1:30 PM on Wednesday and lasted until early evening of the same day. The mujahideen suffered no casualty and withdrew to safety before the AFP could respond with air and ground artillery counter-attack. Immediately after the incident, the AFP rushed troop reinforcements to Munai. As of Thursday, May 28, the whole area was being saturated with government troops. Reports also state that intermittent skirmishes between mujahideen guerrillas and government troops were taking place. But so far, no further casualties were reported on both sides. In another development, Muslim organizations in Marawi City and Lanao del Sur – civil and religious – welcomed the rejection of the Philippine government’s application for observer status by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). A prominent civic and religious leader who requested anonymity told the Luwaran that the Philippine government does not have any business being in the OIC as observer since it is not only a non-Muslim entity but an oppressor of Muslims. The same civic and religious leaders said that the Bangsamoro people have to thank the member-states of the OIC which prominently led the rejection of the Philippine application. He was referring to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Iran. The same leader also said that the OIC Secretary-General deserves to be commended for being true to the lofty principles on which the OIC was founded.
