Iranian Government Hangs 2 Sunnis Belonging To Jundullah Military Wing
10 June 2009
TEHRAN, June 6: Iran hanged two men in a prison in the southeastern city of Zahedan on Saturday after they were convicted of belonging to the Jundullah group, the ISNA news agency reported. Reza Galandar Zehi and Abdolhamid Righi were also found guilty of acting against the government and of possessing arms and ammunition, the report said. Righi shares the same name as the brother of Jundullah leader Abdolmalek Righi but the report did not specify whether the person hanged was indeed the brother. In June 2008, state television had reported that Pakistan had handed over four militants to Iran, including Abdolhamid Righi. The hangings came amid a spate of violence in the southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan region of which Zahedan is the provincial capital. On May 28, 25 people were killed in the bombing of a mosque in the city that was claimed by Jundullah. Two days later, Iran hanged three men in public after convicting them of involvement in the bombing. The militants denied the trio played any role. The bombing was followed by unrest in which 10 people died and which sparked dozens of arrests. Iranian province of Baluchestan has a large ethnic Baluch population that, unlike the majority of Iranians, is Sunni. In a separate report, ISNA quoted a local police commander as saying that security forces had killed four militants on Thursday. It said the militants had blocked the road between Zahedan and Bam in neighbouring Kerman province on Wednesday and burnt a fuel truck, killing one person and wounding two. The next day, police surrounded the area and killed the four men. It was unclear whether the four belonged to Jundallah.—AFP
