September 10, 2008 New Delhi, September 10 (KMS):
Israel's army chief Major General Avi Mizrahi
is on a three-day visit to India to enhance
the already-growing defence ties between the
two countries.
General Mizrahi, the Ground Forces Chief of
the Israeli Defence Forces met and discussed
cooperation with the Indian Army chief General
Deepak Kapoor on Tuesday, Indian Defence
Ministry sources told media men.
On his arrival, the General was given a guard
of honour at the Defence Ministry headquarters
in South Block in New Delhi. During General
Mizrahi's three-day stay in New Delhi, he is
likely to meet Minister of State for Defence
Production Rao Inderjit Singh but would miss
Indian Defence Minister A K Antony and his
deputy M M Pallam Raju who are currently in
USA.
He will also meet the Indian Navy chief and
the Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Admiral
Sureesh Mehta too during the course of his
stay in India. The Israeli army chief, during
his meetings with the Indian Defence Ministry
and Armed Forces top brass, will discuss
matters of mutual concern and interests,
including joint military training and
exercises between the forces of the two
countries, Defence Ministry sources said. Of
particular interest to the Indians is the
Israeli offer to exercise and train in
anti-insurgency and anti-terrorist operations,
sources added.
India and Israel have been sharing greater
defence cooperation since diplomatic relations
between New Delhi and Tel Aviv were
established in 1992. The ties have become
stronger in the recent times with India
emerging as the largest purchaser of Israeli
arms since the beginning of the 21st Century.
India has purchased from Israel the Phalcons
Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems
that would be fitted onto the Indian Air
Force's three IL-76 heavy lift transport
aircraft.
That apart, India has already brought the
Green Pine radars that warns of incoming enemy
ballistic missiles. Indian Armed Forces are
also users of Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles
for intelligence, reconnaissance and
surveillance purposes. Indian Navy has
recently bought the Barak surface-to-air
missile from Israel that ran into rough
weather after charges of kickbacks flew thick
and fast. Israel is also offering India the
Arrow-II anti-ballistic missile for its
missile defence systems in competition with
the US' Patriot missile systems. Indian Army
is a major user of Israeli guns and night
vision equipment, particularly in occupied
Kashmir Valley along the Line of Control.
Delhi urged to stop atrocities in IHK
The President of Shiromani Akali Dal,
prominent Sikh conglomerate of India, Simran
Jeet Singh has said that India should stop
atrocities in Kashmir and grant Kashmiris
right to self-determination.
Addressing a press conference here he said
India has violated its own constitution by use
of force against Kashmiris who have been
demanding settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
He said, “Kashmiris in the past couple of
months have shown their stand against India
but India is using military power to make its
presence felt in Kashmir,” he said.
He said India should stop human rights
violations in Kashmir and the Kashmiri people,
who have been subjected to atrocities at the
hands of troops, should be given right to
self-determination”.
Stressing need for the United Nations to
address the dispute, Simran Jeet said, “United
Nations should pass a resolution on Kashmir
and it should declare Kashmir a UN Trust
Territory.
He said, “An Army General in Jammu said that
soldiers in Jammu region would go back to
Cantonments once the law and order is
restored, but Kashmiris have been demanding
the withdrawal of troops for years, but their
demands are being sidelined.” |
