Over
3600 Unmarked Graves Discovered In
Poonch, Rajouri Districts Of Occupied
Kashmir

KMS -- In occupied Kashmir, the
All Parties Hurriyet Conference has found more than 3600
unmarked graves in 188 graveyards in Poonch and Rajouri
districts of Jammu region.
While addressing a press conference, the All Parties Hurriyet
Conference leader, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, said that 2503 unmarked
graves were found in Surankote, Mendhar, Haveli, and Mandi
tehsils of Poonch district, and 1162 graves in Rajouri,
Thanamandi, Darhal, Sunderbani, Nowshera, Kalakote, and Budhal
tehsils of Rajouri district.
“The survey of the graveyards was carried out from April 5 to
May 15, and only after the investigation these results have been
made public,” Mir said. The team is presently surveying unmarked
graves in Gool Gulabgarh, Mahore, Reasi, Ram Nagar, Kathua,
Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar and Baderwah areas.
The Hurriyet leader said that the number of graves could be
more, as it was difficult to conduct surveys in the areas in the
vicinity of army camps. “We couldn’t cover at least 20 to 25
percent areas in the two districts. Hence the number may
increase if the unidentified graves in the areas left out in the
survey are added to the total number,” he added.
The team, however, has been able to locate 300 unmarked graves
inside an Indian army camp in Topi Marhote area of Surankote
Tehsil in Poonch.
The issue of unmarked graves sparked widespread demonstrations
in various parts of the Valley in March this year when the
Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) discovered
nearly 1000 unmarked graves in Uri area of Baramulla district,
the place with high concentration of Indian troops.
The APDP had published its findings in a report “Facts
Underground” featuring the details of the areas and the
photographs of these unmarked and mass graves. International
human rights organizations including Amnesty International and
Human Rights Watch had expressed concern over the discovery of
these unmarked graves.
Dutch NGO Concerned Over Plight Of Kashmir
Activists
A Dutch based Non Government Organisation, IKV Pax Christi has
expressed deep concern and shock over the attempt to assassinate
Advocate Parvez Imroz, distinguished human rights activist in
occupied Kashmir. Imroz had a narrow escape in a grenade attack
by Indian troops and police at his house on June 30.
Marjan Lucas, staff member of the IKV Pax Christi/Kashmir
Programme termed the attack as a brutal and cowardly act. She
said that Dutch National Peace Movement have been working in
international partnership with Advocate Imroz for over seven
years and highly respects the courageous work done by him and
the his persistence to fight against human rights violations and
impunity in occupied Kashmir, against all odds.
As co-convener of the International People's Tribunal on Human
Rights and Justice in Kashmir, Imroz took up the task to
investigate facts and figures on human rights violations in the
occupied territory, Luccas said. Imroz was awarded the
Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize in 2006. “As
European civil society and international partners, we honoured
him and all the members of his organisation for this
international recognition.”
It is very unfortunate that occupation authorities in Kashmir
fail to understand the importance of his work and his
contribution for the prevalence of justice in Kashmir. It is of
great concern and clearly unacceptable that Imroz, on the
contrary, is being harassed and has to fear for his life, she
lamented. Marjan Lucas said that IKV Pax Christi has expressed
its solidarity with Imroz and those who cooperate with him in a
non-violent struggle for truth and justice, for recognition of
people’s basic human rights.
Marjan Lucas appealed the global civil society to likewise
express their solidarity to Advocate Imroz and his family and
urged international community to use its influence to protect
human rights defenders and to bring the culprits to justice.
